Early embryonic death in mares: clinical and hormonal aspects Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
PAPA,Frederico Ozanam; LOPES,Maria Denise; ALVARENGA,Marco Antonio; MEIRA,Cezinande de; LUVIZOTTO,Maria Cecília Rui; LANGONI,Hélio; RIBEIRO,Erley Felix; AZEDO,Antonio Esteves; BOMFIM,Antonio Carlos de Miranda.
The present study aimed to diagnose early embryonic death in 128 mares. Blood samples were collected at the 4th, 7th, 10th, 13th, 16th, 19th, 21st and 30th day after ovulation and the diameter of the corpus luteum was measured. The diameter and characteristics of the embryonic vesicle were evaluated by ultrasonography. Microbiology, cytology and histopathology were carried out in mares with embryonic death. Plasma oestrogen and progesterone concentration were measured by radioimmunoassay. From 128 mares, 17 (13.28%) showed early embryonic death. The embryonic losses took place at 19 days of pregnancy in 47.05% and at 21 days of pregnancy in 29.4% of the mares. The diameter of the corpus luteum in the mares that maintained pregnancy was similar to those...

Effect of In Ovo Feeding of L-Glutamine to Chick Embryos Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Rufino,JPF; Cruz,FGG; Costa,VR; Silva,AF; Melo,LD; Bezerra,NS.
ABSTRACT In ovo feeding (IOF), injecting nutrients into the amnion of the avian embryo may enhance hatchability, gastrointestinal development and serum metabolism changes. This hypothesis was evaluated with 5 IOF solutions containing L-glutamine. Were used 315 fertile Rhode Island Red eggs were used (breeders with 32-weeks). The experimental design was completely randomized with the treatments constituted by two controls and five solutions containing L-glutamine levels with 45 replicates each. Data collected were subjected to polynomial regression at 5% of significance. Differences (p>0.05) were observed in hatchability and intermediary mortality, with a gradual lower of decrease in hatchability from the IOF of L-glutamine. The yolk sac was higher...

Effect of storage period and egg weight on embryo development and incubation results Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Schmidt,GS; Figueiredo,EAP; Saatkamp,MG; Bomm,ER.
A total number of 300 females and 30 males of two experimental broiler lines, TT (male) and PP (female), with 39 and 36 weeks of age, respectively. Experiment 1 (TT) evaluated the effect of storage time (ST) on hatchability and embryo mortality (EM). Eggs were stored for 2 (ST1), 4 (ST2), 6 (ST3), 8 (ST4), 10 (ST5), 12 (ST6), and 24 (ST7) days and EM was assessed in the periods of 0 to 6 (EM1), 7 a 13 (EM2), 14 to 17 (EM3), 18 to 21 (EM4), and 0 to 21 (TEM) days. Experiment 2 (PP) evaluated the effect of egg weight (EW) on embryo development. Eggs were individually collected and weighed. Embryos were collected and weighed on days 9 (EW9), 11 (EW11), 13 (EW13), EW15, 17 (EW17) days of incubation and at hatching (EW21). ST linearly influenced hatchability...

Effects of Hen Age and Egg Weight Class on the Hatchability of Free Range Indigenous Chicken Eggs Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Abudabos,AM; Aljumaah,RS; Algawaan,AS; Al-Sornokh,H; Al-Atiyat,RM.
ABSTRACT In total, 806 eggs of free-range Hassawi indigenous chickens were collected from local farm in Saudi Arabia. Eggs were weekly collected for 11 weeks. Initial egg weight (IEW) was recorded, and eggs were graded into four classes (A: 35-40 g, B: 40-45 g, C: 45-50 g, and D: 50-55 g). Eggs were stored for seven days at 75-80% relative humidity and 14-16 C, after which egg weight losses (WL0) were calculated. During incubation, eggs were weighed on days 7 (W7) and 14 (W14), and egg weight losses on days 7 (WL7) and 14 (WL14), and total loss (WL0-14) were calculated. Hatchling weight (CW) was measured. The proportion of CW relative to egg weight loss (WL) on days0, 7 and 14 days of incubation (CW:WL0; CW:WL7 and CW:WL14, respectively), and break out...

Hatching distribution and embryo mortality of eggs laid by broiler breeders of different ages Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Almeida,JG; Vieira,SL; Reis,RN; Berres,J; Barros,R; Ferreira,AK; Furtado,FVF.
This study investigated the hatching distribution of eggs from broiler breeders of different ages in distinct periods of incubation. Eggs were incubated in a single-stage experimental incubator. A number of 3.510 eggs were distributed into 3 treatments with 13 replicates of 90 eggs each. Treatments corresponded to breeder age: young (34 weeks), intermediate-age (44 weeks) and old (72 weeks) breeders. Eggs were transferred to the hatcher at 432 incubation hours, hatching was first checked at 449 hours, after which the number of hatched chicks was counted every 6 hours up to 515 incubation hours. After each count, hatched chicks were removed from the hatcher. Data were submitted to analysis of variance using measures repeated. A significant interaction...

Influence of egg pre-storage heating period and storage length on incubation results Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Silva,FHA; Faria,DE; Torres,KAA; Faria Filho,DE; Coelho,AAD; Savino,VJM.
This experiment aimed at evaluating the influence of different heating times of settable eggs of Cobb 500® broiler breeders before submitting them to different storage periods on egg weight loss, embryo mortality, and hatchability. A total number of 1,980 eggs were distributed in a completely randomized experimental design with a 3 x 3 factorial arrangement, comprising nine treatments with 22 replicates of 10 eggs each. The following factors were analyzed: pre-storage heating periods (0, 6, 12 hours at 36.92°C) and storage periods (4, 9, 14 days at 12.06°C). After storage, eggs were incubated under usual conditions, and were transferred to the hatcher at 442 hours of incubation. Eggs were weighed before heating, incubation, and transference to determine...
